Montclair Local seeking freelance news, sports writers
Montclair Local Nonprofit News is seeking freelance news and sports writers.
News writers: We're looking for freelance news and feature writers of all types, but putting a particular emphasis on finding individuals with experience covering local government. If you can get a strong story out of a Township Council, Planning Board or Environmental Commission meeting, we want to hear from you. We cover the topic, not the meeting — but being able to follow the procedure and specific details discussed in government meetings will be key to helping you find the story underneath it all (and, when necessary, to ask smart follow-up questions of government sources or others affected by their decisions and deliberations). These assignments will often involve evening commitments, and next-day writing. Many of these assignments can be handled remotely — most meetings are still held only online — though familiarity with Montclair is a big plus. We're additionally looking for writers with experience covering features of all sorts.
Sports writers: Love local sports? Able to do a quick-turnaround story out of an important game, or put together a sports feature story about an issue important to our young athletes? Interested in telling the stories of athletes who've seen their high school careers interrupted by the pandemic, or who've persevered through adversity? Want to help discuss the strong ties between our sports teams and the community? We want to hear from you ASAP, as we look to expand and improve upon our strong tradition of sports coverage in Montclair.
Writers of all experience levels are welcome to apply. We'll be glad to review writing you've done for high school or college classes, as well as for other publications, when considering your submission. To apply, send an email message and examples of your work to news@montclairlocal.news. A formal resume is welcome if you have one, but not necessary. It helps to live in or near Montclair, but isn't essential for all assignments. We'll give particular consideration to applicants who have ties to the Montclair community, or who have a grounding in its history and culture.
Applicants with photography or videography skills are additionally encouraged to apply — we may have opportunities for work beyond writing (or to be paired with it).
