No one injured in Mission Street, Waterbury Road house fires

No one was hurt in either of two house fires that took place in Montclair on Easter Sunday, officials said.

The first fire occurred at a two-family home on Mission Street around 9 a.m., according to Deputy Chief Robert Duncan, when firefighters on duty at headquarters noticed heavy smoke coming from the neighborhood. The fire was traced to a two-family home, with the home’s second floor consumed in flames, Duncan said. The fire was brought under control within in an hour.

Duncan said that the second floor was completely damaged by fire, while the rest of the house sustained smoke and water damage. Other houses nearby had received some minor damage as a result, he said.

Duncan said that units from East Orange, West Orange, Clifton and Bloomfield responded to the blaze, while crews from Paterson, Cedar Grove and Verona provided coverage for the rest of the town.

The second fire occurred at a residence on Waterbury Road at 3 p.m., when the homeowner called to report seeing smoke coming out of their roof.

The attic area sustained fire damage, while the rest of the house received some smoke and water damage. Fire crews from Bloomfield, Clifton and West Orange provided fire coverage for the rest of the town while Montclair was responding to the fire, Duncan said.

The causes of both fires are under investigation at this time, Duncan said.
