The Montclair Police Department is seeking the public's help in identifying a suspect in a residential burglary on Friday, Sept. 1.

Police were summoned to a residence on Watchung Avenue on a report of a burglary in progress. It was reported that the suspect had broken a glass pane on the home's front door, and reached in and unlocked it. The suspect attempted to take a television, but was unsuccessful in doing so, and it was then that one of the home's occupants confronted him. The suspect fled out the front door, got into a vehicle and was seen fleeing east on Watchung Avenue.

The suspect was described as a black male between 30 and 40 years old, with long curly black hair pulled back in a ponytail. At the time of the incident, he was described as wearing a gray shirt, blue jeans and a pair of yellow and black work gloves. The suspect's vehicle was described as an older model burgundy Honda, possibly with a temporary rear New Jersey tag.

Police released a photograph of what is believed to have been the suspect inside the residence to the media on Tuesday, Sept. 5.

Anyone with information regarding the incident is asked to contact the Montclair Police Department's detective bureau at 973-509-7543.
