A sanitation worker was taken to a local hospital with a leg injury after being struck by a vehicle on Jerome Place Thursday morning.

The 47-year-old Belleville man was collecting garbage cans on Jerome Place near Upper Mountain Avenue at 9:40 a.m. when a car, traveling eastbound on Jerome Place, hit him, said Police Lt. David O'Dowd.

The driver was identified by O'Dowd Friday as a 53-year-old Newark woman. There was a second occupant in the car, also female, but O'Dowd did not offer any information on that occupant's age. An initial report released by Montclair Police Thursday incorrectly stated that the driver as a male.

The sanitation worker sustained a possible broken leg and was taken to an area hospital for treatment.

The accident is still under investigation, O'Dowd said.
