Montclair public schools will be closed Friday, Jan. 7 due to snow, but coronavirus testing that had been planned for the afternoon will continue.

All other before-school, after-school and evening school activities are cancelled.

Testing is set to take place at Montclair High School’s George Inness Annex Atrium from 4 to 6 p.m. Additional testing dates are set for Jan. 14 and 21, and testing is provided by Medi Mobile of Livingston.

The school asks families to bring insurance cards and IDs for testing.

The Montclair district has paused in-school testing after letting its contract with vendor Ginkgo Bioworks expire in December, even as coronavirus cases surged locally and nationally. The district will hear a formal presentation from another vendor at a Jan. 19 school board meeting.

In the two weeks leading up to winter break, the district’s tracking registered 142 new student cases and 43 new staff cases — out of 201 student cases and 60 staff cases total up to that point. The accounting only includes cases registered through the district’s own testing.

The township health department is seeing daily new case levels about 30 to 40 times as high as it did in early November.
