Montclair and four other towns in Essex County have been honored for their work on a project to purchase green energy for their towns.

Montclair, Glen Ridge, Maplewood, South Orange and Verona received the 2019 Collaboration Award from Sustainable Jersey. The five towns formed a consortium known as the Sustainable Essex Alliance, with Maplewood acting as the project leader.

The award recognizes municipal green teams that have advanced sustainability by building strong partnerships. In 2017, the Sustainable Essex Alliance, decided to investigate Renewable

Government Energy Aggregation or Community Choice Aggregation, as a possible project for the Hub. By using the combined purchasing power of the residents, municipalities can often negotiate increased renewable content and better pricing for their residents.

The Sustainable Essex Alliance has allowed more than 30,000 families in five towns to receive cleaner and cheaper electricity.
