After nearly five years of serving authentic Naples-style pizza to the Montclair community, Bivio Pizza Napoletana has announced that it has officially closed its doors.

The announcement came to the community through an Instagram post that the owners, Tommaso and Jackie Colao, wrote on Sept. 19.

“The time has come…After nearly five years of offering true pizza Napoletana in Montclair, Bivio will be closing our doors as of September 17, 2022,” the post said. “It has been our pleasure to serve our guests/friends with the best quality ingredients available to offer a true pizza Napoletana. We thank all of you for your support and you will always remain special to us.”

The Colaos originally opened their first restaurant in Little Falls in 2011. That location closed in 2015, and later, the couple reopened in Montclair with a smaller menu.

What made Bivio so special, according to its website, is the quality of the ingredients used in the pizzas. At Bivio, Tommaso Colao made the sourdough pizza crust using “00” flour from Naples and a 30-year-old starter he called “Baby.” He topped the pizza with San Marzano tomatoes, extra virgin olive oil, fresh basil, fior di latte or bufala mozzarella and sea salt.

New Jerseyans appeared to approve with Bivio showing up frequently on lists of the best pizza in the state.

In November 2021, Bivio Pizza Napoletana closed its doors for a number of months as the owner focused on well-being and recovery. This year, according to the website, the restaurant was meant to close between Sept. 8 and Oct. 1 for vacation. However, as the owners said, they decided to make the “bitter decision” to close.

“Jackie and I have now reached a crossroad (un bivio) and look forward to the next chapter, another journey perhaps,” the post said. “This has been a bittersweet decision, much like a Napoletana espresso, bitter until tasting the sweetness of the unstirred sugar at the bottom of the demi tasse, like life – And so it goes…Grazie mille e tante auguri !!”
