Music and more from Seed Artists
Seed Artists will host a screening of the French documentary “Femme de Jazz” at the Montclair Public Library, 50 South Fullerton Ave., on Thursday, April 27, at 6:30 p.m. In April 1999, drummer Susie Ibarra marked “Women in Jazz Month in New York” with a series of concerts by female artists at the club Tonic. The film profiles 20 of those women. Film subjects Akua Dixon (cello) and Virginia Mayhew (saxophone) will join associate producer Abby London for a conversation after the screening, moderated by Montclair composer/musician Diane Moser. Free.
On Sunday, April 30, Seed Artists begins a monthly Sunday afternoon series of concerts at 73 See Gallery, 73 Pine St. At 2:30 p.m., Seed hosts a free kids’ music workshop, followed by opening artists Rio on baritone sax and MHS’ Willie Oechsli on drums. Headlining musicians are sax player James Brandon Lewis and percussionist Chad Taylor.
Listening sessions titled “Let’s Listen” are held on the first Friday of every month at 6:30 p.m. at the Montclair Public Library. The May 5 session is “Let’s listen to... Dizzy, Ella and Monk.” Dizzy Gillespie, Ella Fitzgerald, and Thelonious Monk were all born in 1917. Curator Peter Bodge will ask the audience to listen to three of his favorite recordings.
