Alan Shurtleff died in Honey Brook, PA, on June 22, 2018, after a short illness.

Mr. Shurtleff was born and raised in Montclair and graduated from Montclair High School in 1959. His career began in the Coast Guard, where he served four active years. He then transitioned to the Merchant Marines, where he served over 40 years on several ships, including a tour in Vietnam. Mr. Shurtleff was also a volunteer fireman in Hunterdon County.

Mr. Shurtleff met his wife Penny at the Blue Mosque in Istanbul, Turkey, when his Merchant Marine ship docked there. They met again in London and subsequently got married in Florida and settled in New Jersey. They moved to Santee, SC, and moved back to Honey Brook in November of 2017.

Mr. Shurtleff is predeceased by his father in 1974, his younger brother Stuart in 2005 and his mother in 2006.

He is survived by his wife Penny in Honey Brook, where they just celebrated their 40th wedding anniversary. Also by his brother Gordon Shurtleff and wife of La Jolla, California, and many nieces, nephews and cousins.
