Barbara F. Hurley of Naples, Florida, formerly of Montclair, died peacefully in the company of family on Tuesday, May 24, 2022. She was 81. 

Mrs. Hurley was a 1958 graduate of Montclair High School and received a bachelor’s degree in history from Newton College in 1962.

She had a lengthy career as an executive at Katharine Gibbs and as director of marketing communications at the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey. 

She touched many lives in her work with community organizations, including the Junior League of Montclair-Newark, The Woman’s Club of Upper Montclair, the Mercier Club and Job Haines Home.

Mrs. Hurley enjoyed a friendly competition, whether playing tennis, bridge or mah-jongg, and would always compete zealously. A lover of books, theater, opera and travel, she pursued a life of learning and exploration with boundless energy.

She is survived by her husband, Jack Brenneis; her children, Keigher Nazarian (Jeremy) and James Hurley Jr. (Oksana); her sisters, Ellen (Michael) Smithson and Ann (Ron) Bradley; her sister-in-law, Jerri Ann Fortunato, and her grandchildren, Caroline, James and Christopher Nazarian and Monica and Mark Hurley. 

Mrs. Hurley was predeceased by her husband of nearly 40 years, James William Hurley; her parents, Angelo and Ellen Fortunato, and her brother, Kenneth Fortunato.

A Mass of Christian burial was said at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Mendham on Friday, June 3.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to St. Jude Hospital or the ASPCA.
