Betty Hammond Johnson, 91, of Cary, NC, formerly of Montclair, died Dec. 16, 2018 surrounded by her family.

Mrs. Johnson was the only child of the late Henry E Tunnell and Keturah Hammond. She was born Jan. 1, 1927 in Frankfort, PA.

Mrs. Johnson was educated in the Dover, DE school system. She married the late Nathaniel Johnson while a student at Delaware State University and moved to Montclair in 1952. From that marriage were two sons, Nathaniel Jr., Christopher and adopted son Herbert Kirlew.

She worked 33 years for the Essex County Welfare Board retiring as a supervisor.

Mrs. Johnson was an active member of the NAACP, Essex County League of Volunteer Workers, and St. Paul Baptist Church.

She is survived by her sons Nathaniel Jr. (Gail), Christopher (Mary), grandchildren Cheo (Kim), Terah (Wintre), Christopher Jr., Isaiah, Dominick, Najir, Brandon and Shante (Alex). Along with seven great grandchildren and daughter in law Alicia Hartsfield.

Viewing be held at from 9 to 11 a.m. Friday, Dec. 21 at Martins Home For Services, 48 Elm St., Montclair. Funeral service will follow at 11 a.m. at the same location.
