Elaine Mary Gaskin, a longtime Montclair resident, died on Aug. 10, 2017.

She was born March 30, 1931, in Newark, the only child of Edward and Dorothy Jackson. She obtained her education through the Newark, Plainfield and Montclair school systems.

Upon graduation in 1949 from Montclair High School, she worked for RCA in Harrison.

She married George Gaskin of Glen Ridge.

During her children’s elementary school years, she was on a committee to establish the Head Start Program at Glenfield School for the children of the Fourth Ward. She was also active with Welfare Rights and was a Cub Scout den mother. Mrs. Gaskin worked as a lunch aide when Montclair established a lunch program at the elementary school level.

She kept her children active in sports, dance, drill teams and music lessons. She loved music and dancing.

Mrs. Gaskin was predeceased by her son, Craig D. Gaskin and grandson, Isaac D. Webb.

She is survived by her son Jeffrey Gaskin, and daughter-in-law Adrienne Gaskin; her daughters, Georgi Webb, Jacqueline Gaskin and Claudia Gaskin; and her son Clinton Gaskin. She is also survived by her grandchildren, Isaiah Gaskin, Ebony Gaskin, Brian Webb, Jason Gaskin, Daria McCall, Alan Gaskin, Damani Nelson, Khari Gaskin (Belinda James mother) and Elijah Gaskin; and her great-grandchildren Amiyah, Ahmid and Ace Pettiford; by her close first cousin Marlene Smithson and family; and by her niece Patty Gaskin-Williams.

She is also survived by a host of close relatives, the Miles, Jones, Solomon, Holmes and Pettiford families, and by close friends.

A funeral for Mrs. Gaskin was held on Aug. 16 at Rising Mt. Zion Baptist Church, Montclair.
