Eric W. Sherman, of Montclair, died in his home on April 4, 2021. He was 58.

Mr. Sherman was born in 1962 in Brooklyn. He was a graduate of Syracuse University and worked for several years as an entertainment editor/writer for the Ladies Home Journal magazine.  

Looking for more fulfillment, he returned to school for a master of social work degree from Hunter College and analytic training at the National Institute for the Psychotherapies in New York. 

He entered private practice and had offices in New York and Montclair, and is the author of two books. He was also a faculty member at the Center for Psychotherapy and Psychoanalysis of New Jersey.

Mr. Sherman met his husband, Dennis, on a skiing trip in 1995, and they had a wonderful life together in Montclair since 1997. They married in 2015 as soon as same-sex marriage was allowed. 

He is survived by his husband, Dennis Hillerud; his sister, Marla Sherman; his nephew, Jonathan Schwoerer; his niece, Elizabeth Schwoerer, and his dog, Toby. 

Mr. Sherman was preceded in death by his father, Benjamin, and his mother, Ellen.  

A private service was held at the Hugh M. Moriarty Funeral Home, and a memorial service will be planned for later this year.  Donations can be made in his name to the Montclair Animal Shelter.  For online condolences please visit
