Everett Thomas Christmas of Garner, North Carolina, a former resident of Montclair who had a 36-year career with the YMCA, died on Dec. 2, 2022. He was 88.

Mr. Christmas was born in 1934 at Mountainside Hospital and grew up in Montclair, graduating from Montclair High School, where he excelled in athletics, earning varsity letters in football and basketball.  

He was captain of the 1952 state championship football team and was voted to the high school All-American team the same year. 

He earned a B.S. in recreation in 1958 from Virginia State College of Petersburg, Virginia. He won varsity letters in basketball and football and became a brother of Omega Psi Phi fraternity. 

Mr. Christmas started his YMCA career in 1960 as physical director of the Washington Street YMCA of Montclair, the YMCA of his youth. He spent the next 36 years as a Y professional on the local, regional and national levels. 

He was a devoted member of the Christian Faith Baptist Church in Raleigh, North Carolina. He was active with the Men's Fellowship and led Black history programs each February.

Mr. Christmas is survived by his children, Alysa Christmas Rollock (David), Sherie Fields Jackson (Larry), Leslie Fields Jarvis (Mario), Lauren Christmas, David Christmas, James Christmas and John Christmas (Pamela); sister, Alberta Holloway; brother, Elvoid Christmas (Mellie), and many other family members and friends.

He was predeceased by his wife, Thelma Fields Christmas; son, Everett Jr.; parents, Thomas and Zelma Christmas; sister, Janet White Bennett, and brothers, Leon, William and Anderson Christmas.

A memorial service will be held Saturday, Jan. 14, at 1 p.m. at St. Paul Baptist Church, 119 Elm St.
