After several months of declining health, James Kevin Berry of Boca Raton, Fla., formerly of Montclair, passed away peacefully on Sunday, May 24, with his beloved wife Sandra by his side. He was 84.

Jimmy (“Big Jim”) was born in Orange on March 28, 1936. He graduated from Orange High School and then served in the Army during the Korean War.

After the war, Jimmy began his 25-year career with the Montclair Police Department, ultimately retiring as a sergeant of detectives. Through these endeavors, he met Sandra Catherine Miller, and they married in 1960.

In 1986, Jimmy had a heart transplant; he was one of the oldest surviving heart transplant patients in the United States.

Surviving him, besides his wife, are his sister, Eileen Rourke; his children, Andrew, Kevin, Robynne, and Elizabeth; and his grandchildren, Scott, Patricia, Haylee, Rylee, and Gianna.

He  was preceded in death by his parents, James Kevin Berry and Elsie Mazzia; his sister, Sandra Montouri; and his son, James Kevin Berry III.
