John C. Kerr Jr. of Toms River, a former longtime resident of Montclair, died on Jan. 4, 2023, after a hard-fought battle with dementia. He was 86.

Mr. Kerr was born to Beatrice and John C. Kerr in 1936. 

He dedicated himself to his work in both the private and public sectors, working for Prudential before serving the state of New Jersey.

When he retired, he devoted most of his time to traveling the Northeast, reading and listening to news radio. He always loved his time at the Shore and having a good meal with friends and family. As a devout Catholic, he was an active member of St. Cassian Roman Catholic Church.

While he never married, he lived a full and vibrant life filled with family, friends and fun. His family meant more to him than words can describe.

Mr. Kerr is survived by his sister, Barbara Clarke (Dave) of Satellite Beach, Florida; his niece, Heather Candelaria, and her sons, Frankie, Daniel and Ryan, of California; his nephews, Jay, of New Jersey, and Ryan Kerr (Jennifer) and their sons, Gavin and Landon, of Millstone; his sister-in-law, Colleen Kerr, of Manasquan; and his nieces Megan Hatch (Ian) and their children, Brianna and Austin, of Point Pleasant, and Melissa Mottley (Kris) and their daughters, Scarlet and Madelyn, of Howell.

He was predeceased by his parents, John and Beatrice Kerr, and his brother, Robert. 

A Mass was celebrated at St. Cassian Roman Catholic Church on Jan. 6, with interment at Immaculate Conception Cemetery.
