Obituary: Kevin Darnell Gibbs
Deacon Kevin Darnell Gibbs, a longtime employee of the Montclair Board of Education, died at University Hospital in Newark on April 28, 2021, surrounded by his family. He was 58.
Mr. Gibbs was born in 1962, the son of Dorine Gibbs and the late Joseph Jerome Gibbs. He attended the Montclair public schools.
At Montclair High School, from which he graduated in 1980, he was a star football player. He went on to attend Morris Brown College in Atlanta, where he received his B.A. in hotel and restaurant management.
Mr. Gibbs was employed by the Montclair Board of Education for 32 years, until his retirement in 2021.
In 2016 he married the love of his life, Deirdre Howard.
Mr. Gibbs accepted Christ as his personal savior at an early age and joined the Bright Hope Missionary Baptist Church in Montclair, where he served on the Mass Choir and was a member of the Sunday School.
He was ordained as a deacon by the Rev. Dejon V. Morris and became chairman of the deacon board.
He was a lifelong member of Eureka Lodge #52, where he served as worshipful master.
Mr. Gibbs, affectionately known as “Kamil,” “Big Dog” and “B.A,” will be remembered for his faithfulness, generosity, sincerity, smile, and love and devotion to his family, his church, especially, and all mankind.
He is survived by his loving wife of four years, Deirdre Gibbs, of Montclair; two children, Malcolm Gibbs and Christina Samuels of Montclair; a stepdaughter, Morgan Howard of Montclair; his mother, Dorine Gibbs of Pawleys Island, South Carolina; two sisters, Wanda D. Leftwich of Montclair and Charlene Gibbs of Pawleys Island; two brothers, Dr. Charles J. Gibbs of Birmingham, Alabama, and Raymond Gethers of Charleston, South Carolina; mother-in-law, Brenda Howard of Alabama; three sisters-in-law, Renee Gibbs of Birmingham, Henrietta Gethers of Pawleys Island and Shaye Howard of Alabama; a brother-in-law, Norman G. Leftwich of Montclair, and a host of nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles, cousins, family and friends.
Mr. Gibbs was preceded in death by his father, Deacon Joseph Jerome Gibbs, and brother, Raynard Gethers Sr.
Arrangements were by Caggiano Memorial Home for Funerals.
