Obituary: Lawrence George Whitehaus
Lawrence “Larry” George Whitehaus 79, of West Orange, formerly of Montclair, died on Saturday, May 22, 2021. He was 79.
Mr. Whitehaus was born and raised in Waukesha, Wisconsin. He and his wife, Karen, moved to Montclair in 1969. From there they settled in Cedar Grove for some time and then West Orange.
He began his career as a mechanic, then completed his college education and became a special education teacher, working for the Mahwah School District. After completing his MBA at Seton Hall, he worked for several years at the New York Futures Exchange and then spent 37 years as a Realtor for Weichert Realtors in Montclair.
Mr. Whitehaus served on the board of the Crystal Woods Condo Association in West Orange and was an expert handyman. Over the years his talents were appreciated at the Garden Club of Montclair and the Montclair Historical Society, where he was the newsletter editor.
One of his favorite things to do was to play his guitar. He and his wife enjoyed planning and traveling in the U.S. and abroad, especially to Paris.
Mr. Whitehaus is survived by his beloved wife of 58 years, Karen (Gumieny) Whitehaus; his brothers, Brian (Christine) and Greg; brother-in-law, Dean Gumieny (Maureen); sister-in-law, Betty Shorts (Paul), and many cousins, nieces, nephews and friends.
He was predeceased by his parents, Marie (Petrie) and John Whitehaus; his mother-in-law and father-in-law, Doris (Degner) and Robert Gumieny, and his brother-in-law, Robert Gumieny.
A memorial service and interment of his ashes will be on Saturday, June 12 at 11 a.m. at Union Congregational Church, 176 Cooper Ave.
