Louis C. McWhorter, a longtime resident of Montclair and a teacher and recreation director, died peacefully on May 27, 2022. He was 90.

Mr. McWhorter was a graduate of Montclair State University and then received his master’s from Seton Hall University. 

He then began his career of teaching physical education at the Avon Avenue School in Newark. Mr. McWhorter was also the director of recreation for all public playgrounds for the city of Newark in the late 1960s and in the 1970s.  

He is survived by his wife, Grace; children, Bruce and Beverly McWhorter; grandchildren, Brian McWhorter the 2nd, Wayne B. McWhorter and Marcus McWhorter, and a host of friends and other family members.

He was predeceased by his son, Brian McWhorter.

Visitation is at Trinity Presbyterian Church, 5 High St., on Wednesday, June 8, from 11 a.m. to noon, when there will be a celebration of his life at the church. Interment will be at Rosedale Cemetery.
