Michael Caputo, a longtime resident of Montclair and co-founder of Caputo Brothers Tree Service, died on Dec. 1, 2022. He was 70.

Mr. Caputo was born and raised in Cedar Grove by his parents, Rocco and Jean, along with his four siblings, Shawn, Kathy, Johnny and Robbie.

He met his wife, Lucille, at a dance in Cedar Grove, and they married in 1972. They made their home in Montclair, where they raised their four children.

In 1972 he founded Caputo Brothers Tree Service along with his brother, Shawn, in Cedar Grove, a business that has grown and become part of the community for the last 50 years.

Mr. Caputo  instilled in his children that they always do the right thing and make the family name proud, something they would impart to their own children. His love of his family grew with each new grandchild; known as “Pup,” he was blessed with eight grandchildren.

He loved spending his weekends in Pennsylvania by the lake, referring to it as God’s country, and spending time with his family in Florida, taking his children and grandchildren out on the boat fishing. He also enjoyed attending his grandsons’ football games and wrestling matches.

Mr. Caputo had a great sense of humor, always cracking jokes. He was known to make his family laugh with his singing and silly dancing. He was as tough as they come, and his devotion to his family was unconditional. He leaves behind heavy hearts.

He is survived by his children, Tiffany (Paul Willis), Rocco (Kristy) and Carmine (Jessica), and grandchildren, Lexys, Michael, Nina, Lena, Olivia, Rocco Jr., Patrick and Jolie.

Mr. Caputo was predeceased by his wife, Lucille; daughter, Joelle, and parents, Rocco and Jean Caputo.

The community is invited to join the family in celebrating his life on Sunday, Dec. 4, from 1 to 4 p.m. at Caggiano Memorial Home for Funerals, 62 Grove St. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10:30 a.m. on Monday, Dec. 6, at Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church, 94 Pine St.

In lieu of flowers, the family would appreciate donations in Mr. Caputo’s name to the ALS Association, als.org, or St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, stjude.org.
