Obituary: Muriel Fernald McHugh
Muriel Fernald McHugh 93, of Crane’s Mill West Caldwell died at home on April 1, 2018.
Mrs. McHugh was born on Dec. 5, 1924 in Natick, Massachusetts, to Ralph and Honora Fernald. As a teenager, Mrs. McHugh moved to Montclair and was raised by her father and stepmother Catherine Fernald, graduating from Montclair High School in 1942. She married Philip McHugh in 1949, residing in Montclair for 54 years where they raised 10 children.
Mrs. McHugh was a Girl Scout troop leader for many years, a Montessori teacher and a Eucharistic minister at Immaculate Conception parish.
She especially enjoyed vacations in New England with her husband and family.
Mrs. McHugh is survived by her nine children: Noreen and Wally Duszynski of Hyattsville, Maryland, Mary and Richard Knapp of Ridgeview, West Virginia, Philip DVM and Christine McHugh of Durham, North Carolina, Laurie and James Cassidy, of Sayreville, Thomas and Joanne McHugh of Cranford, Terry and Bob Dmytriw of Cedar Grove , Christopher and Christine McHugh of Feeding Hills, MA, James and Patricia McHugh of Glen Rock and Carol and Mike Szalus of Middlesex. Also by her 18 grandchildren, Richard, Jeremy and Justin Knapp, Kelly, Megan, Sean McHugh, Erin Ruple, Shani Sasso, Hannah McHugh, Christopher, Brian and Michael Dmytriw, Kimberly and Timothy McHugh, Colin and Quinn McHugh, Emily and Andrew Szalus; and her 11 great grandchildren, Richie, Cosi, Ethan, Mairin, Haley, Lauren, Carter, Shanna, Allisen, Bryce and Vivienna and numerous cousins, nieces and nephews.
She was predeceased by her husband, Philip, her youngest daughter, Eileen McHugh Levicky, DVM, (husband Brian Levicky) and her sister Maxine Fahy.
Visitation was held at the Moriarty Funeral Home in Montclair April 8. A funeral mass was held April 9 at Immaculate Conception Church in Montclair.
