Octavies Nowell, 91, formerly of Montclair, died on Sunday, March 10, 2019, at Regal Care Nursing Home in Connecticut, after many years of dealing with Alzheimer’s disease.

Mr. Nowell was born July 31, 1927 in Gatesville, N.C., son of the late William and Iris Ann (Simmons) Nowell.

Mr. Nowell was a resident of Montclair, for over 65 years until he moved to be near his family, to Waterbury, Conn. in late 2013.

He went to school in North Carolina before entering into the U.S. Army. He served during the Korean War and received a Korean Service Medal with three Bronze Service Stars, ACC Med Japan, United Nations Service Medal, and was honorably discharged in December 1956. He then began his career as the maintenance engineer with The University of New Jersey and retired after working 30 years, from Montclair State University, in 1993.

He enjoyed visiting his brothers and nephews in Connecticut, working on cars, attending cookouts and going to the flea market with his youngest brother Edgar, aka Punch.

Mr. Nowell was predeceased by his siblings; Addie, Ellen, Luvenia, Narsis, Mary, Alberta, Minnie, Otelia, Frances, William Henry, Edgar, George, William and Anthony.

He is survived by his sister, Iristeen Harvey of Gates, N.C., numerous nieces, nephews, cousins and extended family.

Visitation and a Celebration of Life ceremony was held Friday, March 15 at Refuge Church of Christ in Waterbury, Conn. Burial followed at New Pine Grove Cemetery in Waterbury, Conn.
