
Obituary: Peter Nolan Tuomey Sr.
Peter Nolan Tuomey Sr., 83, formerly of Montclair, died Friday, May 31, 2019 at his home in Clifton.
He was born in New York City and grew up in Cold Spring, N.Y. He is the son of Cornelius and Kathleen (Brooks) Tuomey, the youngest of five boys, Cornelius Jr., Christopher Brooks, James, and Stephen Tuomey.
Mr. Tuomey graduated from Haldane High School at 16 and went on to serve in the U.S. Army at 18 for two years. After his service he attended Pratt Institute studying industrial engineering. He held a variety of positions before his employment with Comex in 1967. He quickly became a partner of Floor Broker Associates and was a senior partner in the firm until his retirement in 1987.
1979 after a good day trading he hopped a subway to 42nd Street and handed a substantial check to Covenant House. This was the impetus for one of his proudest achievements as the founder of the Commodity Exchange Center Children’s Fund (CEC Children’s Fund, later Futures and Options for Kids). Thirty years and $30 million later the charity helped thousands of children through a variety of programs in the New York Tri-State region.
He resided in New York City, Jackson Heights Queens, and raised his family in Montclair before settling in Clifton.
Mr. Tuomey was an avid golfer for many years and served as a director of the Hamlet Development Corporation and a founding member of the Adios Golf Club in Florida. He was often accompanied in his adventures (golf and beyond) by his close friend the renowned bagpiper Joseph Brady Sr.
He is survived by his wife of 53 years, Eleanor (Sandell) Tuomey, his children Ann Michel Tuomey, Peter Nolan Tuomey Jr., Charlotte Eleanor Tuomey and her partner Gabriel Cruz, in addition to his foster sons and their children; Truong and Thao Dang, their sons, Nolan and Hansen, Luong and Van Dang, their children, Kevin and Ann, his brothers Cornelius Jr., and Stephen, sister-in-laws Vera and Jan Tuomey.
A memorial gathering will be held from 5 to 8 p.m. Friday, June 7, at Shook Funeral Home, 639 Van Houten Ave., Clifton. A Memorial Mass will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday, June 8, at St. Andrew the Apostle Roman Catholic Church, 400 Mt. Prospect Ave.,Clifton. Cremation was private.
