Portia Denice Wood-Hallman, a lifelong resident of Montclair, died unexpectedly at home on Jan. 9, 2023. She was 59.

Mrs. Wood-Hallman was born to George Wood Sr. and Sheila Baldwin in 1963 in Newark.

She graduated from Montclair High School in 1981.

In 1982 she gave birth to Tristen J. Wood, beginning her journey in motherhood.

In the early 1990s, she attended school to be a dental assistant and graduated at the top of her class. Two years later, she went back to school for phlebotomy, where again she graduated with a strong GPA. 

Shortly after, she met the love of her life, Derek Hallman Sr., and they had a son, Dion T. Hallman.

Mrs. Hall-Woodman led a life where God and love always came first. If you knew her as a friend or family member, you knew you had a fighter in your corner.

She is survived by her husband, Derek (Naeem) Hallman; sons, Tristen Wood (Keesha) and Dion Hallman; siblings, Lorrie Velez and George Wood Jr.; grandchildren, Kayla, Tristen and Michael; nephews, Corbin, Conor, Isaiah and Micah; nieces, Samora and Skye, and her favorite friend/dog, Rocko.

Mrs. Wood-Hallman was predeceased by her father, George Wood Sr.

Visitation will be from 10 to 11 a.m. on Wednesday, Jan. 18, with the funeral to follow from 11 to noon at Martin’s Home for Service, 48 Elm St.
