Obituary: Ramon ‘Papi’ Cuevas
Ramón “Papi” Cuevas, loving husband and father of four, died in Puerto Rico on Sept. 17, 2020. He was 88.
Mr. Cuevas was born on July 23, 1932, in Isabela, Puerto Rico. He was a decorated Korean War veteran.
On May 28, 1956, he married Aida Paredes Crespo. They raised two sons, Manuel (Brother Saalik, a former longtime teacher in Montclair’s public schools and a children’s librarian at the Montclair Public Library) and Jose, and two daughters, Myrna and Jeanette (Janet).
Mr. Cuevas was a proud member of DC 37, a New York City public employee union. After a career of many decades at Woodhull Hospital in Brooklyn, he retired to his hometown of Isabela, Puerto Rico.
Mr. Cuevas is survived by his wife and children, his brothers, Radames and Miguel, and several grandchildren, great-grandchildren, cousins, nieces and nephews.
A funeral Mass was said by Padre Freddie of San Antonio de Padua Catholic Church on Sept. 22; interment was at Los Jardines Memorial Park, where representatives of the U.S. Armed Forces played taps and presented the U.S. flag to the family.
