Obituary: Robert Douglas Fraser
Robert Douglas Fraser, of Iowa City, Iowa, formerly of Montclair and Mt. Crested Butte, Colorado, and the former owner of Bob Fraser Master Locksmiths in Montclair, died peacefully on Oct. 13 at his home, surrounded by his family. He was 77.
Mr. Fraser was born in 1944 in Stanford, New York, to M. Douglas and Irene (Hedberg) Fraser. He moved to Jersey City as a young boy and graduated from William L. Dickinson High School in Jersey City in 1962. He studied at Pratt University before serving in the Army and was honorably discharged in 1968.
After returning home from the Vietnam War, he married Trudy Camlin in Jersey City in June 1970. The couple settled in Montclair, where they raised their two daughters, Kirsten and Megan.
Mr. Fraser owned and operated Bob Fraser Master Locksmiths (later Bob Fraser Security Center) in Montclair, starting the business in 1976. He took pride in providing the community with security and safety, and his knowledge, experience and quality standards helped the business become a success.
He loved helping others. The opportunity to meet new people and form new friendships brought him great joy. Following his retirement in 2014, Mr. Fraser and his wife moved to Mt. Crested Butte to be closer to their daughter and grandchildren.
Mr. Fraser was an active member of that community, where they lived for more than six years, until moving to Iowa City in 2021 to be close to extended family and medical care.
Mr. Fraser was an avid outdoorsman, appreciated nature’s beauty and was passionate about skiing, sailing, camping, traveling, photography and spending time with family and friends, whom he especially loved to cook for. He was always up for an adventure and throughout life was able to visit many different parts of the world.
He was patriotic and proud to say he circumnavigated the Statue of Liberty in an annual catamaran race on the Fourth of July 25 times. Visiting National Parks was something that he put on his bucket list early in life and, following retirement, he and his wife did exactly that in their RV.
Mr. Fraser was active in the High Life Ski Club, Sandy Hook Bay Catamaran Club, Montclair Chamber of Commerce and Associated Locksmiths of America. He was a past president of the New Jersey Master Locksmith Association and the North Jersey Master Locksmith Association. He volunteered for many organizations, including Habitat for Humanity and various groups in Crested Butte.
Mr. Fraser is survived by his wife of 51 years, Trudy Fraser of Iowa City; two daughters, Kirsten (Ben) Oldread of Crested Butte, Colorado, and Megan Fraser of Iowa City; three grandchildren, Wyeth, Nedda and Anders; four sisters, Jackie Bryant of Cedar Rapids, Iowa, Karen Fraser of Pittsburgh, Elaine Orzechowski of Little Falls and Mary Swenson of Iowa City; two sisters-in-law, Janet Spanko of Thompson, Pennsylvania, and Nancy Rapp of Iselin, and many nieces, nephews, extended family members and friends across the world.
He was preceded in death by his infant son, Ian, his mother, Irene (Hedburg) Fraser, his father, M. Douglas Fraser, and his stepmother, Margaret (Schlottman) Fraser.
His family held a private service; a celebration of his life will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Habitat for Humanity of Gunnison Valley, 307 North Main St., Suite 2E, PO 1295, Gunnison, CO 81230.
Arrangements were by Lensing Funeral and Cremation Service of Iowa City.
