Sandra Olive Lang, a former two-term Montclair councilwoman and a lifelong resident of the township, died on Nov. 10, 2022. She was 79. 

Ms. Lang, known as Sandy, was a graduate of Montclair High School, where she was a member of the dance team.

She received her undergraduate degree from Hampton University where, following in her mother’s footsteps, she pledged Delta Sigma Theta. She served as president of the sorority’s Montclair chapter from 1982 to 1986. 

She went on to secure a master’s in business administration and a juris doctor, both from Rutgers University.

Professionally, Ms. Lang worked on Wall Street, spent many years at IBM and, ultimately, worked until retirement as a sales representative for the educational publisher McGraw-Hill.

She served two terms on the Township Council, was a member of the YWCA, a campaigner for the YMCA, a president of the local chapter of the NAACP and a board member and current secretary of the Union Montclair Housing Corp., which included serving the tenants of the Mathew G. Carter Apartments for more than 20 years.

Ms. Lang is survived by her nieces, Annette and Andrea Lang and Wallena Gould; her nephews, James (Tariq) Lang Jr., Saladin Lang and Doug Wilson, and many grand-nieces and -nephews.

She was predeceased by her parents, Roxie (Myatt) Lang and James Lang, and her brother, James Andrew Lang. 

Visitation is Thursday, Nov. 17, at 6 p.m. at Martin’s Home for Service, 48 Elm St. The funeral service is Friday, Nov. 18, at 11 a.m. at Trinity Presbyterian Church, 5 High St.
