Obituary: Sharon Kathleen Karlson
Sharon Kathleen Karlson, of Montclair, died on Feb. 15, 2021. She was 69.
Born to the late Carlton and Florence Kjos in 1951, she graduated from Sibley High School in Mendota Heights, Minn., in 1969 and went on to obtain her nursing degree. She was a nurse at the VA Medical Center in Minneapolis and in Salisbury, N.C. for 30 years.
She will always be remembered as the “Flower Lady,” expressing herself through her artistic arrangements. When she wasn’t busy with her flowers, she enjoyed traveling, playing golf, baking pies, buying antiques and spending time with family and friends.
She was an active member of Grace Presbyterian Church who volunteered regularly at MESH. She dedicated many hours to helping out at Van Vleck House & Gardens and beautifying her South Montclair neighborhood.
Everyone who knew her felt her warmth, kindness and effortless devotion to helping others. She was always there with a smile and a laugh, making everyone she met feel loved and reassured that they had a true friend. As an amazing woman with an intense sense of empathy, she battled episodes of severe depression, ultimately leading her to take her own life.
She is survived by her only daughter, Andrea Mayendia (Cristobal); grandchildren Soren and Lucia; three sisters, Darlene Boots, Marilyn Needham and Cheryl Emeott (Russ); and many nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews and loving friends.
The family is planning a celebration of her life this spring in Minnesota and on Zoom; details will be posted on her Facebook page. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the National Alliance on Mental Illness.
