Obituary: Sylvester C. Robinson Jr.
Sylvester C. Robinson Jr., of Montclair, died on Oct. 23, 2021. He was 96.
Mr. Robinson, affectionately called “Rob” or “Robbie,” was born in Fayetteville, North Carolina, in 1925 to Sylvester C. Robinson Sr. and Mary Lou Robinson, the only son among their five children.
The family moved to Baltimore when he was at an early age; there, he graduated from high school. He went on to serve in the U.S. Navy until his honorable discharge in 1946.
After moving to New York, he attended Long Island University, where he received a bachelor of science in chemistry. It was in New York where he met Geraldine Hayes, whom he later went on to marry. They moved to Montclair, where they raised their four children, Joyce, Sylvester III, LaVerne (Aisha) and Brenda (Aminah).
With an abundance of knowledge and skills acquired from his father-in-law, he established a successful business in home construction and repair while he pursued his college degree.
Mr. Robinson was later hired as a chemist at Maas & Waldstein. He continued his work as a chemist until his retirement.
He had a strong faith and was an active member of Elmwood United Presbyterian Church, where he served as an usher. Prior to Elmwood, he was a long-standing member of Park Avenue Christian Church, where he served as treasurer.
He displayed a passion for cooking and shared his expertise with a host of family and friends. He enjoyed meeting people from every facet of his life.
Mr. Robinson was raised to the sublime degree of Master Mason in 1963 at the Eureka Lodge #52 F&AM, Montclair. He enjoyed sharing knowledge and teachings with brothers in the lodge, where he formerly held the position of Grand Master of the Lodge and Dean of Instruction.
He was a devoted husband, father and friend. He was a role model to his family and community, demonstrating selflessness and generosity with his time, resources and knowledge. He was hard-working and reliable.
Mr. Robinson is survived by his son, Sylvester C. Robinson III (former wife Sherri Robinson), daughter, Aminah Muhammad (Amin), 12 grandchildren, Hanifah T. Muhammad, Ihsan N. Muhammad, Afuw M. Muhammad, Nura Muhammad, Aminah T. Muhammad, Abdul Qadir Muhammad, Aisha D. Robinson, Anisah Z. Muhammad, Akhira Muhammad, Ayanna D. Robinson, Baqir Muhammad and Abdul Khaliq Muhammad; 10 great-grandchildren, Hadiyah Muhammad-Dean, Mecca Muhammad, Hasyah Muhammad, Afuw Muhammad II, Basheerah Muhammad, Ishmael Muhammad, Bilal Muhammad, Shariq Muhammad, Amari Muhammad-Craven and Talia Muhammad-Craven, and many extended family members.
He was preceded in death by his father, Sylvester C. Robinson Sr.; mother, Mary Lou Robinson; former wife, Geraldine Robinson; daughters, LaVerne (Aisha) Robinson and Joyce E. Robinson, and sisters, Merion E. Grandison and Hazel F. Robinson.
Services were Oct. 29 at Elmwood United Presbyterian Church.
Funeral arrangements were by Martin’s Home for Service.
