Tonya Cobb Cochran, formerly of Montclair, died at her home in Virginia on Jan. 13, 2021. She was 66.

The daughter of the late Francis Cobb Sr. and Ella Cobb of Montclair, Mrs. Cochran grew up in Montclair and attended the township’s public schools. 

While at Montclair High School, she was on the dance squad and in student government. She enjoyed sewing and clothing design.

After graduating from MHS in 1972, she attended Hampton

University, where she received her B.S. in education. While at Hampton she was a member of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority. 

Mrs. Cochran then began her 18-year teaching career in the Virginia Beach public schools. She loved her work and enjoyed watching her students’ progression. She was honored as Teacher of the Year by the Virginia Beach public schools.

Although Mrs. Cochran lived in Virginia, she never forgot her roots in New Jersey, as she made regular trips home to Montclair. 

She is survived by her sons, Derrick and Michael; grandson, Jeffrey; brother, Francis Cobb Jr.; sister, Cheryl (Cobb) Iton; nephew, Donovan Cobb; nieces, Vania (Cobb) Johnson, Cassandra Iton and Crystal Iton, and a host of dearly loved family members and friends.
