Van B. Winston Sr., 101, of Montclair, died on Tuesday, Oct. 9, 2018.

Mr. Winston moved to Montclair at a young age. After graduating from Montclair High School in 1936, he held various jobs in town prior to becoming a substitute postal letter carrier. He was drafted into the United States Army in 1941 and served in the South Pacific Theater, Guadalcanal.

Mr. Winston met his wife of 66 years, Catherine, while preparing for deployment in World War II. After being honorably discharged as a staff sergeant he returned to Montclair and was employed with the United States Postal Service, until he retired in 1973. Upon retirement, he worked as a school crossing guard until 1987.

He is survived by his children Shirley Winston Satterwhite, Sylvia Winston Green, Michael Winston and Van Buren Winston Jr., and by 11 grandchildren, and a host of great-grandchildren and great-great grandchildren. He is predeceased by his wife Catherine Winston, and by his daughters, Joyce Middleton, and Jo-Ann Winston.

Visitation will be held from 10 to 11 a.m. Tuesday, Oct. 16, at Caggiano Memorial, 62 Grove St., Montclair. Entombment to follow at Glendale Cemetery in Bloomfield.
