Virginia (Reed) Demoreuille of North Caldwell, a former longtime resident of Montclair and a special ed teacher at Edgemont School for more than 10 years, died on Jan. 4, 2023, surrounded by her family.  She was 71.

Born in Newark, Mrs. Demoreuille grew up in Caldwell and graduated from James Caldwell High School. Known to her friends as Ginny, she attended Bucknell University, where she received her bachelor’s degree in art history and was a member of Pi Beta Phi sorority.  

She later received a master’s from Montclair State University and taught special education for more than a decade at Edgemont School.

Mrs. Demoreuille was an involved member of the Montclair community, where she lived for 47 years before recently moving to North Caldwell.  She was vice chair of the Garden Club of Montclair’s Program Committee, tasked with bringing in interesting speakers to educate and entertain members.  

A lifelong learner, she had a passion for the French language and culture and enjoyed taking classes at FIAF Montclair for many years.  Her appreciation of learning extended to sponsorship of students at Bucknell University and in Kenya.

Mrs. Demoreuille was also a lover of the arts; she worked at the Whitney Museum after college, and after the death of her father, Henry M. Reed, in 2006, worked with museums and galleries to display paintings from his art collection.  

Some of her happiest moments were spent visiting her family home in Vermont, where she had grown up.  She was an avid biker, skier and tennis player and had many valued friendships through these activities.

Beyond her interests, Mrs. Demoreuille was a devoted wife, mother and grandmother.  

She is survived by her husband of 47 years, Bernard C. Demoreuille; children, Peter B. Demoreuille (Jane Ng), Laura A. Demoreuille (Scott M. Rohrer) and Amy E. Demoreuille (Keith P. Taylor); grandchildren, Tristan, Rowan, Lucie and Henry, and her maternal aunt, Jane Griffith.

Mrs. Demoreuille was predeceased by her parents, Henry M. and Mary Ann Reed, and her brother, Robert Reed.

Visitation is Wednesday, Jan. 11, from 4 to 7 p.m. at Shook-Farmer Funeral Home, 45 Roseland Ave., Roseland.  A memorial service will be held on Thursday, Jan. 12, at 10 a.m. at St. James Episcopal Church, 581 Valley Road, where Mrs. Demoreuille was a member for more than 40 years.
