
Places in Montclair to get warm in this week’s frigid temperatures
With dangerously cold temperatures in the forecast this week, there are several places in Montclair for individuals to get warm.
The Township Council chamber, located at 205 Claremont Ave., is open during business hours from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. for anyone who needs respite from the cold.
The Montclair Public Library main building, located at 50 S. Fullerton Ave., is making its auditorium available for individuals during its business hours Monday, Tuesday and Friday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m; Wednesday and Thursday from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m.; and Saturday from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. A charging station will also be available.
The Bellevue Avenue branch will not be available as a warming center.
The library requires any resident coming to the library to wear a mask, as per the township's current requirement for masks in indoor public places, and to adhere to social distancing of at least six feet. The library will continue as a warming center this week until Saturday. The library will reasses next week if the warming center will continue.
The Salvation Army Montclair Citadel, located at 13 Trinity Place, is open during its business hours from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. for anyone interested in seeking relief from the cold weather. Individuals can stay in the building until closing, and can get hot beverages such as coffee and tea as well as lunch, which is served from Monday through Wednesday. The Salvation Army directs individuals to Toni's Kitchen, at 73 South Fullerton Avenue, for lunch on other days. According to the Toni's Kitchen website, during January it is offering hot to-go meals Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays from 11:30 a.m. to noon and Sundays from 5 to 5:30 p.m.
After the Salvation Army closes at 2 p.m., individuals can go to St. Luke's Episcopal Church, located at 73 S Fullerton Ave. from 3 p.m. to 6 p.m. The Salvation Army will also refer individuals seeking additional shelter to other services.
Montclair Emergency Services for Hope provides overnight respite at Union Baptist Church, located at 14 Midland Ave., from 9 p.m. to 7 a.m. No guests are permitted after 11 p.m.
The Statewide Homeless Hotline and New Jersey's 211 information service can provide further assistance. Dial 211 or 877-652-1148 (if using a rotary dial phone, dial 1-877-746-5211). Services are accessible in various languages for non-English speakers.
Tuesday, Montclair will see highs around 20 degrees, and lows of 14, with temperatures feeling as though they're below 0 due to wind chills, according to the National Weather Service. Similarly frigid temperatures are expected all week, with lows of 10 degrees Friday night.
