Police are investigating two pedestrian accidents involving children over the past week, both near schools.

A four-year-old boy sustained minor injuries after being grazed by a car near Nishuane on Friday, May 4, while a 12-year-old girl was grazed by a car near Hillside on Tuesday, May 8.

On Friday, at 3:40 p.m., a vehicle approached the intersection of High Street and Cedar Avenue and came to a stop. The crossing guard waved the driver through, but the driver made a left turn onto High Street. At the same time, a four-year-old boy was being walked through the crosswalk by his nanny. The driver braked to avoid them, but the car just barely hit the boy.

O'Dowd said the boy was sent home with his mother, and was found to have minor injuries. No charges had been filed as of Thursday.

The driver was identified only as a 26-year-old woman from Belleville.

On Tuesday at 5:07 p.m., a driver was traveling south on Orange Road near Hillside School, and came to a stop at the Hillside Avenue light. The light turned green and the driver went ahead. A 12-year-old girl was walking east through the crosswalk on the south side of the intersection. The vehicle struck the girl, but with not enough force to knock her over. An ambulance and paramedics responded to the scene, O’Dowd said.

Police are still investigating the accident, including whether the signals were green in either direction and whether the pedestrian walk signal was on. No charges have been filed as of Thursday, and O’Dowd said that the report did not indicate that the girl had sustained any injuries.
