Substation failure caused power loss to 10,000 homes

A PSE&G substation failure is being blamed for Wednesday night's massive blackout that left nearly 10,000 people in the dark for up to five hours throughout Montclair and four neighboring towns.
At around 11 p.m. on Wednesday, Sept. 11, the power went out in much of Montclair, and some households in Glen Ridge, Bloomfield, West Orange and Newark. Overall, 9,783 households were without power for two to five hours.
The cause of the outage was an equipment failure at a PSE&G substation in Montclair, according to PSE&G spokesperson Cheryl Olcheski. She would not disclose the exact location of the substation, but Montclair officials said it was the one on Valley Road.
On social media, residents were reporting outages during the night in all of Montclair south of Bloomfield Avenue, and the area encompassing Chestnut Street, Walnut Street and Claremont Street.
Power was restored between 1 and 4 a.m.
