Pride Month 2021 activities in Montclair
Out Montclair has announced the following events as part of Pride Month. For more information and to register for events (unless otherwise noted): outmontclair.org.
Friday, June 4, at 3 p.m., Pride flag-raising ceremony at Town Hall. This year, the township will raise the Progress Pride flag “to broaden that signal of safety and inclusion even further so that our trans and non-binary citizens and LGBTQ people of color may feel even more affirmation in their hometown too. Let this be the clearest symbol that all are welcome here,” Councilman Peter Yacobellis, founder of Out Montclair, said. The progress pride flag adds a five-color chevron to the classic rainbow flag to represent marginalized LGBTQ+ communities of color, along with the colors pink, light blue and white, which are used on the Transgender Pride flag.
Friday, June 4, starting at 6:30 p.m., Pride Shabbat at Temple Ner Tamid, 936 Broad Street, Bloomfield. The evening service in the temple’s sanctuary will elevate LGBTQ+ affirming texts and experiences. Following that will be an outdoor open-mic concert of music, poetry and community; each participant will need to register separately. Participants are urged to bring their own picnic goods and something to sit on, such as folding chairs or blankets. The outdoor event will be moved indoors if weather is bad. Sunday, June 13, 12th annual Garden State Equality Pride Walk, 1:30 to 3:30 p.m. The public is invited to join the Out Montclair team at First Congregational Church of Montclair, 40 South Fullerton Ave. The event is Garden State Equality’s largest annual community fundraiser.
Wednesday, June 16, 7 to 9 p.m., Out at Night, for ages 21 and older, to celebrate Pride in 2021. Egan &Sons, 118 Walnut St. Live DJ, appetizers provided, suggested two-drink minimum. Registration for the event is full, but there is a waiting list: outmontclair.org.
Thursday, June 17, 6 to 9 p.m., Pride Stride 2021, a Fleet Feet and Montclair Brewery Pride run. In-person participation is sold out, but individuals and teams can register for the virtual 5K run, walk, hop or skip. In connection with the event, Curated Home and Living, a new store across the street from the brewery, will be donating 10% of its sales that day to Out Montclair.
Friday, June 18, 8 p.m., Luna Stage presents “Gay History for Straight People” at Van Vleck House & Gardens, 21 Van Vleck St. Bring a blanket for a socially-distanced outdoor performance by Broadway World Award-winner Will Nolan and his comedic alter ego, Leola, “your new favorite Kelly Clarkson-worshipping, senior citizen, redneck lesbian,” who teaches some gay her-story and fights negativity with love.
Thursday, June 24, 5 to 7 p.m., Out Montclair Teens (ages 12-17) pizza social. Details to come at outmontclair.org.
