Ring in the New Year by reliving the Montclair Jazz Festival
Music lovers get a chance to ring in the New Year with the Montclair Jazz Festival this weekend through SiriusXM Real Jazz radio. The satellite radio station has partnered with the festival to play 15 hours of uncut performances on channel 69.
The performances that will be played took place on the last day of the festival during the Downtown Jamboree, which hosted nine artists, including Christian McBride, artistic director for Jazz House Kids. McBride, an eight-time Grammy Award winner, also hosts his own talk show, “The Lowdown: Conversations with Christian,” on Real Jazz radio.
The Jazz House Collective, OZMOSYS featuring Omar Hakim and Rachel Z , Artemis, Danielle Ponder, Matthew Whitaker, Claudia Acuña, The Cookers, Immanuel Wilkins and Monty Alexander Harlem Kingston Express will also be included in the SiriusXM show. Melissa Walker, founder and president of the festival, said they are “super excited” about the upcoming broadcast.
This isn’t SiriusXM’s first time broadcasting the festival. In 2021, they broadcast the festival. In 2020, when events like music festivals were nonexistent, they played older festival performances.
The Montclair Jazz Festival took place over three months last summer, starting in July and ending in September. This was the 13th year that the festival was held, hosting more than 200 artists, 150 vendors and more than 40,000 festival goers.
Ted Chubb, associate artistic director of the festival and vice president of programming at Jazz House Kids, said of the festival: “We believe jazz is for everybody, and we want everybody to see themselves onstage in some way. We also want people to hear some music that they like and that they may already know while also hearing some new surprises while learning and expanding their knowledge of the music as well.”
The SiriusXM program starts at 8 p.m. on Saturday, Dec. 31, and runs until 2 p.m. on Sunday, Jan.1 on Channel 69.
