Culture in brief: Seed artists presents listening to Art Farmer
“Let’s Listen To Art Farmer,”a curated listening session led by Noal Cohen and Lynne Mueller, will be presented by Seed Artists on Friday, Aug. 17, 6 p.m., at the Montclair Public Library, 50 South Fullerton Ave. Farmer is considered one of the most respected and original of modern jazz trumpeters.
In his 50 year career, “his improvisational approach favored lyricism and elegant construction rather than technical display, yet never sacrificed emotional impact, and he was a master of ballad interpretation,” according to Seed artists. He switched from trumpet to flugelhorn in the 1960s and then to the flumpet in the 1990s. Farmer received the Austrian Cross of Honor for Science and Art, First Class in 1998 and the NEA Jazz Masters designation in 1999.
A special celebration of the 90th birthday anniversary of NEA Jazz Master Art Farmer. This month, series curator Peter Bodge will join you in the audience to listen to special-guest curator Noal Cohen. From Noal:
"Certainly one of the most respected and original of modern jazz trumpeters, Art Farmer (1928-1999) left a substantial legacy throughout a career that lasted over 50 years. 2018 brings the 90th anniversary of his birth as well as the creation of a new website dedicated to his life and music (artfarmer.org). Join us when author and discographer Noal Cohen and Lynne Mueller, leader of the website team and significant friend and manager of Farmer in the later years of his life, present a curated listening session highlighting his recordings, including those made when he was living in Europe."

Seed Artists was founded in 2005, in Brooklyn, by renowned drummer Pheeroan akLaff; his wife, Luz Marina Bueno; and Roy Frasier and Gillian Frasier, Esq. Artist and scholar Dr. Charles Martin soon joined them. The goal: Use music to bridge gaps between generations and cultures, promote community involvement, and provide music education to underserved youth.
Montclair
When akLaff and Bueno moved to Montclair, New Jersey, in 2010, Seed was dormant for a couple of years. Then akLaff met Chris Napierala, Seed’s Creative Director, at a yard sale. They started to talk music, the Montclair arts scene, and the socioeconomic landscape in town, and plans to revive Seed Artists soon followed.
