Sergio Gonzalez will be joining the Montclair Board of Education as its newest member.
Mayor Robert Jackson, who appoints board of education members, announced Gonzalez' appointment today, Aug. 26. Gonzalez will finish out the unexpired term for former BOE President Laura Hertzog, who resigned in May. The term will expire in April 2021.
Gonzalez is an executive with Dell, and has been with the company for four years, according to his LinkedIn profile. He holds a Bachelor of Science degree in marine science from Rutgers University and an MBA from Fordham University's Gabelli School of Business.
Jackson said the Gonzalez family has "a remarkable American story" – he is a first-generation Cuban American, and his wife Maximilienne is a recently naturalized citizen from Montreal. He lives in Montclair with his wife and their two children, Valentina, 5, and Mateo, 3.

“I am thoroughly impressed by Mr. Gonzalez’s intellect, his engaging personality and his energy and commitment to Montclair and its public schools,” said Jackson. “I am so proud that this dynamic couple decided to settle in Montclair given their many options.”
With Gonzalez's joining the BOE, the board is back to a full seven members. There has been a vacancy since Hertzog resigned during the reorganization meeting in May. In a resignation statement, Hertzog blamed a culture of toxicity among the board as one of her reasons for departing.
Gonzalez is the second new member to be appointed to the BOE this year. In May, Alfred Davis was appointed to take the place of Joe Kavesh, who was not re-appointed after his term was up.
In addition to the new membership on the BOE, the district announced the appointment of Dr. Nathan Parker as Montclair's new interim superintendent, taking the place of Kendra Johnson.
