On St. Patrick’s Day, Sunday, March 17, Irish-Americans — and those who wish they were (at least for the day) — celebrate their heritage.

Here are a few ways to do that in and around Montclair:

Fiddle and guitar at the MPL

Thursday, March 14, 6:30 p.m., Montclair Public Library, 50 South Fullerton Ave. Fiddler Deb Shebish and guitarist/vocalist Mark Kilianski will perform jigs, reels, airs, ballads, pub songs and more.

Newark St. Patrick’s Day Parade

Friday, March 15, 1 p.m.

The 84th annual parade begins at the Prudential Center, 25 Lafayette St., continues on Mulberry Street past Gateway Center, NJPAC, Military Park, St. Patrick’s Pro-Cathedral, the Newark Museum and Washington Park. General chairman is Montclair’s Michael D. Byrne. The 2019 St. Patrick’s Day Parade will feature the seventh annual High School Band Competition with marching bands, drum lines, and color guards from across New Jersey competing within the Order or March. Prizes will be awarded in several categories.






Céad míle fáilte: St. Patrick’s Day craft (age 4 and up)

Montclair Public Library main branch, 50 South Fullerton Ave., third floor

Bellevue Avenue Branch Library, 185 Bellevue Ave., Kids’ Place

“Céad míle fáilte” translates to “a hundred thousand welcomes.” Stories from Ireland, soda bread and butter, and a Leprechaun take-home craft.


ThiS Ain’t Paddy’s Day

Saturday, March 16, Tierney’s Tavern, 128 Valley Road. Doors open at 8:30 p.m.

The Porchistas perform, along with the Tierney’s Tavern debut of Asbury Park’s Lowlight.

Tierney’s Tavern, 128 Valley Road 

Sunday, March 17:

Noon: doors open
2-5 p.m.: traditional Irish music on second floor. The Bedlam Boys, local band.
They write: "St. Patrick’s Day at Tierney’s features our kitchen being converted into a corned beef conveyor belt, and we prepare 800 pounds of it in house before the big day. The meat is cooked to serve in a boiling brine of butter, garlic, and pickling spices, then served on rye bread with an optional platter of veggies. We’ll have extra corned beef prepared all week for everyone who can’t make it on the day of."

Sunday, March 17:

12-8 p.m.: Inaugural Irish festival

1-2:30 p.m: Irish/Celtic reggae music, kilt contest, and limerick/poetry slam. Ray’s Luncheonette next door will serve corned beef and cabbage.
