A stairwell partially collapsed at Montclair High School Friday morning, according to Acting Principal Terry Trigg-Scales.

An email was sent at 12:43 p.m., Sept. 7, informing parents of the incident in which no injuries were reported.

The stairwell in the main building on Chestnut Street was immediately closed off to students, who were directed to use other stairways to navigate the school. Officials from the township building department came to investigate, Trigg-Scales said in an email sent to parents.

The email did not specify the exact location of the stairwell.

On Monday, Sept. 10, a structural engineer is expected to conduct an analysis of the section of collapsed stairs to determine the cause. The structural soundness of all the stairwells in the building due to the increased usage by rerouting students and staff will also be assessed, Trigg-Scales said.

Township communications director Katya Wowk said the building inspector's report into the incident was forthcoming as of Friday afternoon.
