School officials reported an increase in COVID-19 cases at Montclair High School, Buzz Aldrin Middle School and Hillside and Watchung elementary schools this week and have implemented 10-day masking requirements for the high school and Buzz Aldrin.

Parents had worried about expansion of athletic field cutting into playground.
Montclair’s elementary schools were scheduled to reopen for hybrid learning on Nov. 16, while the middle and high schools were scheduled to reopen on Nov. 30. The start of hybrid learning had been delayed once before, as the schools’ ventilation systems were found to be in need of upgrades before students could be admitted to the buildings.
Montclair has seen at least 77 new COVID-19 cases for the month of October, up from 55 new cases in all of September.
The school has not yet opened for students. Elementary school students are expected to return to school for hybrid learning on Nov. 9.
