Two seats will be up for election March 8.

Davis died Dec. 2 — making the effective deadline under state law to fill his seat Feb. 5. 

The Montclair Board of Education expects to have a replacement in place by Feb. 5.

It's unclear what happens once the role is filled — for instance, whether that person will serve until March or November.

The event will be held at Davis Integrated Medicine.

"You can have an interview process, you can have a selection process where you identify candidates, you can have a nominating committee, you can draw names out of a hat," the board was told.

"His impact went beyond his volunteer work and successful business," Councilman David Cummings writes. "He inspired many by the way he lived."

The seven-member board must grow to nine, but rules for the election timeline are unclear. And it’s not known if or when the board might ask voters to bond for big capital improvements.
