For the first time, the majority of members will be appointed by the current mayor, who is also the incoming president of the state's teachers union.

Also discussed at the meeting was a recently approved proposal to embark on an Energy Savings Improvement Plan, a series of energy upgrades at the schools that would help the district save money on utility bills in the long run. 

The Montclair Board of Education held its annual reorganization meeting Monday night, in a virtual setting for the first time, as the district faces unknowns about the new school year.

Prior to his work in Moonachie, Ponds served as the principal of Parsons Elementary School in New Brunswick. He has also worked as a teacher and basketball coach in the Boston Public Schools.
