Justin Rich grew up in Montclair. And he wants to feel like he belongs here.
Rich, who is Black, saw April 20’s conviction of Minneapolis police officer Derek Chauvin in the murder of George Floyd as “a small victory.”
The “school resource officer” was born in the wake of school shootings in the late 1990s and early 2000s, including the Columbine High School shooting in 1999, after which officers more commonly began being stationed in schools.
On Thursday evening, some of the rally’s student organizers took the next steps, by bringing the demands of the students before the Montclair Board of Education, and called for board members to begin taking formal action on them.
