Montclair’s mayor and council will meet Friday, March 25, just before midnight to vote on a negotiated rent control ordinance and to repeal one that was passed in April 2020, but never went into effect after a group of landlords petitioned to force it to a referendum. 

But a committee of landlords has only until Friday to withdraw a petition that could force the special election. We'll know more Thursday about what happens next.

Tenant advocates and Montclair landlords are back at the table, attempting to come up with a version of rent control that they can agree on.

Unless a compromise is struck and landlords withdraw their petition, a special election is expected in May.

A petition to bring the issue of rent control to Montclair voters in a referendum has been certified by the township clerk, after a nearly two-year battle township officials fought to avoid such a special election.

Montclair could hold a special election on whether to implement the rent control ordinance first passed by the Township Council in April of 2020 — but never put into effect — on May 10.

A group of landlords is suing to stop further rent freeze extensions and nullify past freezes.
