Montclair Kimberley Academy wants to keep athletes safe and is taking the extra step of requiring masks for athletes while on the field.

School is back in session in the township of Montclair, and with the ban on indoor sports lifted, that means winter sports will resume.

Interstate sports competitions are still prohibited, since interstate travel for sports has been deemed to be a risk factor for spreading COVID-19. And attendance is limited to those who are directly involved in the game – players, coaches, referees and support staff – and no more than 10 spectators. 

On Thursday, November 19, 2020, the NJSIAA announced that it is pushing back winter sports start dates for both practice and competition.

Despite a valiant effort, Montclair Kimberley Academy's field hockey team fell to Northern Highlands in the 2020 NJSIAA tournament.

New Jersey Governor Phil Murphy Executive Order 187, allows indoor sports to practice and play, a step towards high school winter sports.

Sports that play outside are likely to proceed, while volleyball and gymnastics, which are both indoor sports, may be affected by the requirements. There are between 700 and 900 students who participate in those sports, Murphy said. 

Montclair coaches can get back to work on Aug. 17, but the MHS football team labeled themselves a club for the summer to get a head start.

NJSIAA gives the go-ahead for high school practices starting July 13 but while MKA plans, MHS coaches must wait for hiring approval before they can work.
