Sybil Archibald’s “A Fish Cannot Drown in Water: The Inner Life of the Artist,” with prints, paintings, and sculpture, begins Thursday, Jan. 16, with a reception from 7 to 9 p.m. at Clerestory Fine Art, 40 Church St. The exhibition continues through February.
Clerestory writes, “The exhibition title is pulled from a poem by the Christian medieval mystic Mechthild of Magdeburg (German, c.1207–c.1282/1294), and ties into Archibald’s larger message of spiritual evolution in the face of adversity. Shortly after graduating from college, Archibald was diagnosed with scleroderma, a rare autoimmune disease, and given five years to live. Calling upon ‘the transformational power of making art,’ she returned to working and continues her abundant practice more than 25 years later, with her work even being featured on the HBO show ‘Mrs. Fletcher’ in autumn 2019. The exhibition is accompanied by a catalogue.

Archibald will give an artist’s talk next Thursday, Jan. 23, 11 a.m., to discuss her inspiration. Children’s tours will be held on Saturday, Jan. 25, at 11 a.m., and on Saturday, Feb. 8, at 2 p.m. A sacred poetry reading will be held on Wednesday, Feb. 5, at 7:30 p.m. A panel discussion, titled “Collector ‘101’ Series: Collecting Art on Paper,” will be held on Tuesday, Feb. 11 at 7 p.m. The exhibition will close with an artist’s talk on Saturday, Feb. 29, at 2 p.m.
