A landlord group fighting Montclair’s rent control ordinance has filed another suit against the township and the township clerk, this time claiming a civil rights act violation.

The judge reversed his earlier ruling, siding with a landlords group that has been pushing to put rent control on the ballot.

The petition to put rent control up for a referendum vote has been deemed insufficient by the Montclair Township Clerk.

After some renters reported receiving increases when their leases expired, rent-control advocates are asking the town to enforce the rent-freeze ordinance approved in May.
