Witrh lawn signs around Baristaville like this one, you’d think Verizon was promising the second coming. Once you see the light, however, what you won’t see is Montclair’s local cable, Channel 34. From the Montclair Times

However, when subscribers, such as Mayor Ed Remsen, changed from the municipally licensed Comcast to Verizon, they searched in vain for Channel 34.
“You have to have it,” said Remsen. “You shouldn’t have to make a choice of losing local access if you switch providers.”

  1. The Bad News is: the Bloomfield Local Channel is also missing.
The Good News is: I have five cartoon channels now. So who needs the Bloomfield Local Channel?

  2. lol conan.
Do you really need FIOS TV if you watch town public access? When are you going to get to your vast on demand library or your 120 movie channels?
btw.. I am pretty happy with my service and price so far.

  3. So far, so good, Hawk. I have a brand new set so the FiOS set top box (which weighs almost as much as the TV) has no clue which codes make it work, and I have had to do a lot of setup myself — it could be more plug and play — but full HD (1080i) is so good it is frightening, and with the FiOS Internet running at 20Mbps those Viagra spams download in no time at all. Haven’t gotten the first bill yet, but I am 100% sure they will fark it up… 🙂

  4. Earth to the township council:
Get a $400 digital camera and a copy of imovie and put the sessions on your website.
    It really isn’t that hard.
Until I can easily find a line item budget for the BOE and Township on the town’s website I won’t excatly put much stock in the local politicians’ “calls” for easily disseminated civic information.

  5. I’m psyched!! Getting Fios so I CAN’T see them bastards spending my F’in money.
And really, those town council meetings are as boring as the dental channel.
Are school board meetings on tv?

  6. “Get a $400 digital camera and a copy of imovie and put the sessions on your website.”
… if only they could remember the password. Bloomfield’s town Website, by the way, was last updated in the Spring of ’07. 1907.

  7. Remember all the sound problems we had with Montclair’s TV 34? Well, after a year I turned it on day before yesterday and, SURPRISE! You can’t hear the sound!
Montclair’s inability to implement pretty much anything is become legend.
Note to the Administration: If you can’t hear the channel when you tune in on Comcast, you can’t hear the channel when it becomes available on Verizone!

  8. You make it sound like this is a bad thing!
Hell, since we went FIOS 2 months ago, there’s no looking back. EVERY aspect about it is better than Comcrap.
And, they won’t cut your copper if you ask them not to. It’s only from the street to the house anyways. They cut mine and can keep it.

  9. >>>Haven’t gotten the first bill yet, but I am 100% sure they will fark it up… 🙂
I got my first bill last week. They make Comcast look like masters of competence. The bill was 10 pages long, with all sorts of vague and/or incorrect charges. The bill I expected to be about $300 was $515. And customer service is only open during business hours – so you’ll havr to take time out of your workday to speak to someone to correct it. Verizon has made millions by incorrectly billing people and thinking they won’t notice, or care.
Aside from the billing, and the fact that there are no free movies on On Demand to speak of unless you subscribe to premium channels, I like the quality of FIOS much better than Comcast.

  10. I too had a billing problem, but nothing too major…they tacked on $75 for laptop installation, of which I setup, not the tech. But Verizon were cool about it and instantly credited it. Not a problem since.
Free movies are coming BTW. Pretty soon we will be getting the new IMG software on our boxes with new guides, DVR, etc.

  11. Steve — thanks for the heads up: I saw a web version of my first FiOS bill and they had tacked on two laptop installations, both of which I did, so I will get all over them for that. Don’t they answer the FiOS 800 number over the weekends? I hope they do, because it took me 20 minutes to get through to them on a weekday before my install…

  12. Conan: The FIOS installers also charged me for two laptop installations which I did myself. Most likely it was the same crew. In any case, Verizon said no problem when I called. They treated it as a totally common complaint and put up no resistance.

  13. Is Remson a moron? The township contracts the cable company to provide cable service to its residents and local channel 34 is part of the package. Is he the only person who does not know what a public access channel is? He then asks why a competitor cannot give him a channel provided by cablevision. I really feel sorry for the residents of Montclair.

  14. I also had a charge for “additional computer” installation, but they took the charge off without question. The customer service for FIOS is horrible, but the products are good. They got my initial order completely wrong (I ordered the triple play, but they did not install broadband.) When they finally installed broadband, they assigned the wrong telephone plan, so I was still not getting the triple play price of $95/month. And having customer service only available on weekdays from 9 – 6 is ridiculous. Once I got through to customer service they finally straightened everything out, but the entire process of getting the new service up and running took a few weeks.
But… the TV works great (my Comcast was always freezing) and the broadband is crazy fast. Better yet, I took down all of the old phone lines and cable lines attached to my house and now only have 1 skinny fiber line. Ahh, the simplicity.

  15. Spicoli, Fred, Steve, et al: Got my first bill when I got home last night: $413!!! The bill had two additonal notebook installs (can’t say “laptop” in front of the marsupial) which was around $180 with tax. Took 25 minutes to get through to a human this morning, but once I did everything was fixed pretty quickly.
Next to reading the Federal Budget or an IRS publication, Verizon bills are up there with the DaVinci code in their complexity. But they have recognized that I have the $95 package, although the actual discounts to get the three services to arrive at that figure are buried all over the statement. We will see when the next bill comes in.

  16. Channel 34 sucks. if I want the News in Glen Ridge, Ill hang out at Just Sandwiches or read the bulletin on bloomfield/ridgewood corner. My 8 year old niece could make a better power point presentation (which essentially all ch 34 is) It must be run by elected officials, because even the AV team at GRHS could add a little bit of 2000s technology. Montclair’s is not something to be proud of either
